The life expectancy of a city guard who didn't have his last name known to a player is about 1 minute, 14 seconds. In some rare cases, however, mutant strains of city guards are known to ascend to player character status, which may explain how they got those scars (UNDER the helmet to boot) and survive just to return to your shop another day.
